Dr. James J. Nedumpara
Dr. James J. Nedumpara is Professor and the Head of the Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL), established by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. In this capacity, he advises the government on international trade, investment and dispute settlement matters. James has taught at Jindal Global Law School, where he joined as a founding faculty member and has worked as Trade Officer (Legal) with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) India programme. James was appointed as the India Chair of the WTO Chairs Programme in 2022.

James received his PhD from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, and holds graduate degrees in Law from the University of Cambridge, UK (as a Cambridge Commonwealth Scholar); the NYU School of Law, USA; and the National University of Singapore. He received his first degree in Law from Mahatma Gandhi University, India. James has appeared in various WTO dispute proceedings as part of the Indian delegation, and has also advised the Indian government in relation to several FTA negotiations. James has published widely in the field of trade remedy law, most recently, Non-Market Economies in the Global Trading System: The Special Case of China (2018). James has also co-authored a comprehensive text book with Professor Leila Choukroune entitled International Economic Law: Text, Cases and Materials, published by Cambridge University Press (2021).

James has served visiting fellowships and taught in a number of law schools including University of New South Wales (UNSW) (2019), ITAM Mexico City (2018), FGV Law School, São Paolo, Brazil (2011) and National Law School of India University, Bangalore (2013 & 2016). He is a Member of the Executive Committee of TradeLab, a global network of legal clinics and practica and is also the Co-Chair of South Asian International Economic Law Network (SAIELN).
